Pattern making process

At Giz Atelier, the modeling process is carefully developed to ensure not only the quality of the piece, but also respect for the principles of conscious fashion and personalized production

O desenho e o processo de modelagem

In this article, we share the transformation of a sketch into a technical pattern and, finally, into a ready-to-wear garment.

What is the textile pattern making process?

Pattern making is the art of transforming a clothing design into a technical pattern, which serves as the basis for cutting and assembling the fabric. It is at this stage that the fit, proportion, functionality, and aesthetics are defined in garment.

There are two main methods:

Paper clothing patterns
  • Manual garment pattern making -made with a ruler, paper and direct cutting
  • Digital clothing patterns (CAD) – uses specific software for greater precision and efficiency, especially in repeated productions.

Both approaches are valid. At Giz Atelier, we mix the two according to the needs of the project.

Stages of the pattern making process at Giz Atelier

each project has its own story, but the technical process follows well-defined steps:

1. Initial meeting (creative briefing)

We talk to the brand or client to understand their style, objectives and target audience. From there, we analyse references, fabrics and functionalities.

2. Patterns development

We create patterns tailored to the design of the piece, the materials and the desired measurements. Patterns can be developed on paper, digitally or both, depending on the project.

3. Prototype manufacturing

When the pattern is ready, we take the next step: the production of a prototype. We usually use raw fabric or a similar material, which allows us to accurately assess the fit, volume and structure of the garment without wasting fabric. This stage is really important., pois fornece uma primeira leitura tridimensional do modelo idealizado.

4. Adjustments and testing

Next, with the prototype, we carry out practical tests and we adjusted the technical details. At this point, we identify minor corrections needed in the mould, whether in the fit, proportion or functionality of the piece. Based on these observations, we improved the model until we achieved the desired result — a balance between form, comfort and production feasibility.

5. Preparation for production

Once the model has been approved, we prepare the final files (digital or physical), markings and instructions for cutting, sewing and production.

  • Firstlyit guarantees a superior fit and comfort., adapted to the body and the purpose of the garment.
  • In addition, it avoids rework and waste of materials.which is crucial for both sustainability and production efficiency.
  • As a resultit significantly improves quality and longevity. of the garment, making it more resistant to wear and tear and the passage of time.

At Giz Atelier,we treat each project with dedication and precision, respecting the creative vision and values of those who seek us out.
